a stream of geek banter

techcrunch.com, a site I visit multiple times a day, to be honest I have a pinned tab in Chrome, has been invaded by ads. I read their content for free and for that reason I am ok with ads in general but the added ads outside the the sidebars are a bit excessive. I can’t imagine this is something Michael Arrington or others at tech crunch would be excited about. To me it seems like a move made by the new owners of Tech Crunch, AOL. Naturally I understand the value of the Tech Crunch homepage and not capitalizing on that would be foolish, however, being excessive is foolish as well.

In a recent post Mr. Magdaleno shared that he had bought a new “WHITE” iphone for his girlfriend. Ahhh how sweet, I think Apple trademarked those type of special moments, it called iLove. Immediately following the news of his new purchase was this claim, “this is the last iPhone I will buy“

Girlfriend happy, white iPhone bought, this is the last iPhone I will buy. Why? Well because the next version has to be completely amazing, significantly more than the latest iteration. I believe Apple knows this too. The next iPhone will have to be considerably different and more powerful. Let’s make a lists, because people like lists. The next iPhone will have to have:

  1. A better camera, than the awesome one it has now.
  2. Faster 4G, but that’s a carrier issue.
  3. A new design, maybe carbon fiber.
  4. A World Phone, working in London, Los Angeles and Glendale.

I don’t think the version of the iPhone rumored to be released in the Fall of 2011 will have these features. It may only have the new A5 processor found in the iPad 2. Production will begin in May and it will be released in September so Tobias is taking a wait and see approach. I think he and I finally agree on something.

It’s finally here …

Tobias writes: The white iPhone 4 was something that I once thought I wanted and probably would consider if I was purchasing a new i-device however to me it is one more reminder that more than likely the tradition of the summer release of a new iPhone is over. I know WWDC is still right around the corner but I dont think Apple would release a new device, even if it is just a color change if they were about to announce a new phone. There are rumors of an iPhone 4S, similar to the 3GS, as much as I want to say Im not excited, I am! An A5 chip in an iPhone would be pretty cool!

George writes: Yeah I am getting the white iPhone from AT&T for my girlfriend. Four years ago I asked her what she wanted and she said, “the white one.” It’s an aesthetic choice. It’s been worth the wait. Very excited.

If you’re anything like me you’ll take any opportunity to pull out your phone and snap a picture. I currently have over 7,582 photos on my iPhone and that’s only a small portion of my collection. Thousands more reside on my macbook pro, my external drives, dropbox, facebook, Instagram, mobile me, and all three of my flickr pro accounts. Of course not all are worthy of sharing, but for those that are, here is how I use online sharing platforms to share photos:

If iTunes were Hacked to the extent Sony’s Playstation Network was Hacked, there would be blood in the streets, so far no ones freaking out. It made  the news on the ticker on CNBC’s Closing Bell.

I hope they are true. I have a Wii that’s now a Netflix Streaming Device in the living room. The existing device still has potential but Nintendo needs a new device to make the development community excited about the Wii again.

We will find out in a month, until then visit Josh, Paul and Nilay at This is my next.

Hey it’s awesome Apple new products just print money. Total revenue for the quarter is US$24.6 billion, earnings per share are over $6, Fred Wilson’s guitar gently weeps. Apple has more cash on had than any other competitor and are now suing their suppliers, Samsung, because that’s how they roll in Cupertino. Soon Apple will assume the role of hegemon.

However hiding in the wake of Apple Q1 revenues and profits per share is the disaster that is Yahoo Search, which sold itself to Microsoft technology that has under delivered and seen Yahoo loose enough market share to make them irrelevant. The last company that invested in Microsoft technology was My ____. (formerly MySpace.com). the full article is available at SearchEngineland.com

See, before the fourth quarter of 2010, Yahoo used its own ad platform. But in late October 2010, it began carrying ads from Microsoft. This was part of the Yahoo-Microsoft deal, where Yahoo largely gave up having its own search technology and ad system, outsourcing this to Microsoft.

As part of the deal, Yahoo agreed to pay Microsoft 12 percent of its net search revenues. The red line reflects this, net revenues that were left after payments went out to Microsoft. This big new chunk of money flowing out is what Yahoo has been calling “headwind” that has accelerated its year-over-year growth decline.

The video speaks for itself, Representative Jesse Jackson (D-Illinois), son of Civil Right Leader Jesse Jackson, makes a syllogistic argument stating two events as causality. Let’s explore the Congressman’s journey through syllogistic reasoning, iPads have lead to the closure of Borders Book Stores, because iPads are so awesome people no longer read books. In his own words;

It’s simple: Because everyone can download books and newspapers, everyone who works at bookstores (he notes Borders going out of business) or the publishing industry, or for textbooks, will lose their jobs to the people making iPads in China.

Jesse Jackson Jr. claims the iPad is killing American jobs!

2010 was a great year for tech movies, Inception remains the best film of the year. Yes the King’s Speech was special and it won the Academy Award, but the film people will remember, the film that will make the most impact on our culture, science and technology is Tron: Legacy.
